How much does it cost to trek to Machu Picchu?

There's a few things you need to take into account when it comes to planning for this type of high altitude trip. The big one is the trip cost and with us, the trip to Machu Picchu via the Tomakaya route is currently £2,295, This essentially includes everything from when you land in Lima and then your internal flight to Cusco. All the things you can think of when it comes to the trip until you leave, the guides, porters, the hotels and food.

In terms of external costs you have your international flights. Now, when you fly into Lima from the UK the prices are going to be anything between £400 - £800 depending on the time of year that you're flying. You might get some deals if you book way in advance, you may be able to get some money off but essentially if you can budget anything between that price range you won't go far wrong.

The other main expenses are your equipment costs. Now, this depends on what you've already got and when you're trekking to Machu Picchu, you don't need any technical gear so you'd be surprised on how much gear you've already got. Things like waterproofs, fleeces, base layers, socks, a day pack, maybe a duffel bag etc. A useful tip is we always plan for all four seasons. So plan for the rain, plan for the heat, plan for the cold. If you're from the UK, you'll be used to that on a daily basis! HERE is a guide which Yeti Hapus wrote about the kit she bought on a buget before embarking on her joruney to Machu Picchu.

So when it comes to costs for equipment that can be anything from nothing if you've got it all, all the way up to 1 to £2000 depending on what you have or haven't got, so have a rummage in your wardrobe!

Another expense that you will need to consider is visas. If you get a visa when you come in to the airport, you're looking at anything between 20 to £40, not too much but then the other biggie is your trekking insurance. We have companies that we recommend to go through, like True Traveller, Big Cat and Campbell Irvine. These have been tried and tested. All of our Evertrekkers have used them over the last few years and we highly recommend those three companies so you don’t have to trudge through the maze that is google. For these you are looking at anything between 100 to £150 for the insurance. If you've got any pre-existing medical conditions or over 60, it can bump up your insurance a bit.

With EverTrek something that might help out with these expenses is that we've got low deposits and payment plans, so if you want to spread your payments out on your trip, and you're trying to budget as much as you can, just don't forget when you book it in to select how many months you want to pay over or just drop the Yeti’s an email or a call.

The Machu Picchu trek is an incredible journey that is definitely worth the cost. So start planning your adventure and get excited for one of the most awesome experiences of your life!
