Trip overview

All about this trip

Kilimanjaro the long way - The quieter little-used Lemosho route which runs along the remote and beautiful Shira Plateau is the best route for acclimatisation. There is no rush and this route will increase your chances of summit success compared to the quicker routes on the mountain. As you hike above the plateau, you will get great views of Kibo's southern glaciers before we reach the easier Barafu Route. You will spend 4 nights above or close to 4000 meters helping you acclimatise before you're ready to tackle the final 2 stages of the summit climb Kilimanjaro. Summit day is an early start as we watch the sunrise whilst we tackle the ascent to the high point at Uhuru Peak (5895m). You have made it to the roof of Africa.

Join us on the Kilimanjaro - The long way

  • Our Kilimanjaro trek is on the quieter Lemosho route. This is also one of the longer routes taking us several days to get above 5000m.
  • The slower route is ideal for acclimatisation
  • Our Team in Tanzania have been guiding to Kili since the early 90's.
  • Watch the African sunrise from the crater rim of Africa’s highest mountain (5895m)
  • We take special care of our porters & guides. They are probably the best equipped in Tanzania.

Experience Required

The Kilimanjaro  - The long way is suitable for keen walkers/trekkers who are able to walk for 4 – 5 hours in a day, with a light rucksack. Ideally, you will be able to walk for consecutive days for this length of time.

    Arrival day in Tanzania

    Jambo! Welcome to Tanzania!

One of our team will pick you up at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer you to our 'base camp' for the next day or so, Springlands Hotel. You will be introduced to your mountain guide and also get to meet up with the rest of your group.

  • Day 2

    Explore and pre-climb preparation day

Today is all about exploring the local area around Moshi at the base of Kilimanjaro. We will stretch our legs and head out passed the rice paddies and through the local forest towards the centre of Moshi. On the way, we will stop and visit some of the local schools and markets and get a feel for the culture. After some lunch we will relax and gather all of our equipment as we prepare for the big trip tomorrow.

  • Day 3

    Start of your trek - (2250m - 2750m, ) 3 hours hiking

After breakfast and a briefing from your guide, we will gather our gear and drive from our hotel in Moshi to Londorossi Park Gate (2250m, 1.5 hours).  From here we will take a forest track in a 4WD vehicle where we drive to Lemosho Glades (2000m, 11Km. 45minutes).

'It all starts here'. This is where the adventure begins as we hike through the beautiful forest trails to Mt Mkubwa (big tree) campsite (2750m, 3hours).

We will camp here for the night.

  • Day 4

Trek towards the Shira Plateau and reach Shira 1 Camp (2750m- 3500m) 5 hours hiking

It all starts to get real now as the trail gradually steepens. As we hike up we will reach the Shira Plateau at 3600m and enter the giant heather moorland zone which crosses the Shira Ridge at about 3600m before we drop gently down to Shira 1 Camp(3500m). There is a great chance of seeing some wildlife here, especially birds of prey, including the Auger Buzzard. As we hike along the ridge you will see the wall of the Western Breach on Kibo in the distance which is pretty damn awesome when covered in snow.

  • Day 5

The Kilimanjaro adventure continues as we cross the Shira Plateau (3500m - 3850m) 3- 5 hours hiking

We take our time today as we let our bodies acclimatise to the high altitude. We will take a slow and steady hike across the plateau that leads us to Shira 2 Camp(3850m, 1.5 hours). As this is a short day, we can explore the Shira Caldera which is Kilimanjaro's oldest volcano (Erupted around 700,000 years ago). Shira Cathedral is a great way to test out the body at this height so we will hike up 200m to the summit. Take in the views of the forest below that you hiked through over the previous day or so.

  • Day 6

The trek continues into the Baranco Valley as we hike across the Lava Tower (3850m - 3900m)5-6 Hours hiking

As we leave the moorlands behind, we will climb the rocky path that passes the amazing Lava tower towards the Baranco Valley. At this point, you should be starting to adjust to the high altitude but we will still take it slow as we head towards our campsite at 3950m.

  • Day 7

We trek across the Baranco Wall and to the foot of the Heim glacier (3950 - 4000m) 4 hour hike

After breakfast we leave the Barranco ridge and hike up the Barranco wall. After a steady hike, we will hit the foot of the Heim glacier. This is a relatively short day as you will have a free afternoon to relax and enjoy the views.

  • Day 8

Time to get some altitude as we trek towards the Barafu hut(4000m - 4550m) 4-5 hours hiking

We start to gain some real altitude as we head towards the Barafu hut, located at an altitude of 4550m. You wil start to notice that you are significantly higher than the clouds below as you hike across the rugged volcanic landscape. The two peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo are seen from this location. We will get an early night as we prepare for the summit push tomorrow. You're getting real close now!

  • Day 9

Kilimanjaro summit day. The hike gets real! (4550m - 5895m) 11-13 hours hiking

It's time to take on the highest mountain in Africa. One of the 7 summits!

We will get up at around midnight and grab some light breakfast and fuel the body before the big climb. The incline starts to get really steep but we will take it slow and steady. After a number of hours of hiking, we will hit the crater rim as the sun starts to rise. Take in the views of the steep ice cliffs and you may even spot Mt Kenya in the distance. After another couple of hours we will reach the summit at Uhuru peak (5895m). YOU HAVE DONE IT!

After some time taking pictures and catching our breath we will descend all the way back to Barafu hut for brunch and a little rest. We will then descend to Mweka hut for dinner and where we will be camping for the night.

  • Day 10

Hike to Mweka gate and journey back to Springlands Hotel

The legs will be a little sore but after breakfast, we will walk down towards the Mweka gate and grab our transfer back to the Springlands Hotel in Moshi. Time for a beer and a relax with your group. What an achievement!

(Optional days - One more extra day may be spent on Either Shira 2, Barranco or Karanga for acclimatization purposes to make the program a 9-day trek)

  • Day 11

Time to bid farewell to the mountains

The trip is over but the memories will last a lifetime. One of our team will transfer you back to Kilimanjaro International Airport from Springlands Hotel.

Where you'll be staying during this trip

We use the fantastic Springlands hotel in Moshi, Tanzania for all of our treks and expeditions. It's a great place to relax and chill before you head off on a long trek to tackle Kili or one of the other peaks.

Whilst on the mountain we will be camping. A little basic but all part of the adventure!

Here’s what some of our awesome customers had to say
I traveled to EBC this October and would really recommend Evertrek. Being my first adventure holiday, it was reassuring to have such a supportive team with lots of information, advice and kit recommendations prior to departure. Having little things like filtered water and meals included in the cost (I saw another group having to queue to pay for breakfast) might seem trivial but it meant we didn't have to worry about running out of money on the trek - and they treat their guides and sherpas (who were top class and couldn't do enough for you) with consideration and respect. I always felt well looked after throughout my time in Nepal, and they put a great deal of effort into ensuring that the holiday went smoothly such as rearranging flights, and adapted to any issues that arose.Evertrek made it a great holiday. I met some fun people, have some great memories and lots of photos! You even get a free bag, medal and certificate!

Just travelling back from an amazing EBC trip with Evertrek. I've travelled with a lot of other adventure travel companies in the past but have to say Evertrek has been the best. From the easy booking process and pre departure info and support, to the amazing local Kathmandu team, guides, sherpas, porters and yak men in Nepal I cant fault Evertrek. If you are thinking about a trip just do it. You wont regret it. And you wont regret choosing Evertrek either. I'm already looking at other trips and not even home yet!

Absolutely first class, from when I first booked knowing nothing about hiking at altitude, right the way through the trip itself. Everything has been handled with the utmost professionalism and the entire team has been incredibly helpful, knowledgeable and hardworking. Our guide, Padam, and his team are worth their weight in gold. Could not recommend Evertrek enough.

Not been to EBC yet but have booked to go with them next March.I’ve just returned from a fantastic training weekend with them in the Brecon Beacons. It was wet and windy but Evertrek didn’t disappoint, . From start to finish, the experience was great. Both Andy( the owner) and his trusty sidekick Dave (the painted Yeti) were there to make us feel welcome. They were both hands on, and their knowledge was second to none. I can’t wait to actually go to Everest, and after this weekend I feel assured that I’ll be in great hands. Nothing was too much trouble, and it was great see the way that Andy and Dave talk about Everest with such a passion.Well done guys

This trip was exceptional from start to finish. Has to be one of the best run and professional companies I have come across. Before we even started we were sent weekly emails and lots of correspondence to get us excited for the trip. Any questions and worries were answered straight away some even by video replies!! The actual Everest base camp trip itself was one of the best experiences of my life however very tough! Everything from start to finish was run perfectly. I couldn’t have asked for more from Andy, Dave and the Sherpas they provided! A 5 star service all round!

I had the most fantastic trip in Nepal, all thanks to evertrek. Andy was so so helpful from the moment I first rang about going. Nothing was ever to much, always had a speedy reply- which was reassuring when I was stressing about equipment. The training weekend that they offer is also incredibly helpful and really gets you ready for your holiday. Our guide in Nepal, Bhim and his team, were absolutely fantastic, they worked unbelievably hard, you never wanted for anything. (Watch them, they cheat at cards!!haha) As for the trek, the negotiations of getting to Lukla were a bit up in the air...but that's just Nepal! Go with the flow. But once we got there, it was absolutely brilliant, everyday the scenery was beautiful and I never felt like they expected to much from you. Plenty of rest time and tea stops! I personally really enjoyed the food (I lived on veggi curry and rice-you get seconds :D) and thought all the accommodation was fine!! Basically an all round incredible trip, there wasn't a second I didn't enjoy!!! Highly recommend Andy and the team. Would defo do another trek with them 😀

Our guide Phurba, Sherpa Harry and porters were brilliant! Getting us up the mountain in one piece and looking after us superbly along the way. I would highly recommend using Evertrek as your trekking company! Brilliant service

Special thanks to Phurba and Harry our guides over there, they keep a eye on you and don’t let you go to quickly up the mountain and look after you. If you are thinking about doing it just go for it you won’t regret it . Awesome

I had the most amazing trip to Everest Base Camp with Evertrek, thank you Andy for being the font of all knowledge about this trip and for Rishi our guide for looking after us. Having recently booked myself on a trip to Everest Base Camp with Evertrek, I thought it would be one of those trips where you get to hear about everything you should have done two weeks before you go. Not with Andy and Evertrek. Immediately Andy was in touch with information, assistance and support. You could feel his energy coming at you. Along with the practical advice, Evertrek arrange training activities. These are great for finding out first hand what you need to know and how you might cope with the activities ahead. It really does crank up the excitement when you share your thoughts and views with fellow Evertrekers. This weekend we had one of these training activities in the Brecons. Andy made us all very welcome, and was there all the way, rain and shine, to helps us all along. We made some great connections, enjoyed the socialising (you earn it!) and came away even more excited to be getting on the plane to Nepal. Hopefully there will be more such events to enjoy, and build on the training already done. I’m already walking the dogs for 10mins more🙂.Thanks to Andy and the team for a great weekend. Good luck to those on their way in the next few months, and those who have a longer wait we can share your excitement.

A truly wonderful once in a lifetime experience. My sister and I trekked to Everest Basecamp with Evertrek to mark the tenth anniversary of our dearest Mum passing away. It was an emotional experience we will never forget. It gave us time to reflect on wonderful times past and brought us closer as only shared endeavour can. The Himalayan backdrop was the perfect location. But it's the people that made the trek. Our guide Kishor is a wonderful guy. A real fixer, high altitude expert, family man and now, friend. When the weather delayed our flight, he did everything he could to make sure we were first onto another. His experience, knowledge and local contacts got us into places we just wouldn't have seen without him. He knew when to go to the best places to avoid the crowds and he was the picture of happiness with his infectious smile. He was kind to the point of putting us first all the time, without hesitation. A true gentlemen and the source of lots of fun and laughter - perfect for morale. Our porters also deserve a mention for their hard work and dedication through some difficult long days at high altitude. Manesh was particularly hard working and charming, keen to learn and become a guide himself in time. Our trek wouldn't have been the same without them and when I go again I will definitely seek out the same team.My recommendation? Grab a loved one and go trekking in Nepal in the capable hands of the Evertrek team. And request Kishor to be your guide. You won't regret it.

Well Evertrek you did not disappoint! Finally managed to tick the box in life and get to Everest Base Camp all thanks to Andy Moore. A colleague of mine actually recommended Bucket list (Evertrek) after he completed the EBC and three passes trek. So I made contact with Andy and the rest is history so they say. My brother and I booked the Everest Base Camp Classic 15 day trek and all elements met our expectations with ease. On arrival at KTM we met our guide Kishor who took us to our hotel. We stayed at the Hotel Buddy as the Apsara was full. Lovely hotel. Nice clean rooms. The city tour was brilliant and welcome meal good. Onto the trek itself. The journey up to Lukla was exciting and after a delay of a few hours (not days thankfully) we arrived and met our Porters. Then dream really did begin and the trek started following the tracks the towards Namche, and beyond to EBC. The sheer beauty of the scenery and mountains during the trek was awe inspiring. The first glimpse of Everest on day three bought a tear to the eye. The leg of the trek to EBC was long and hard given the altitude but a massive sense of achievement was felt by all of our party when we got there! Worthy of special mention was our guide Kishor. He dealt with a few admin issues at the domestic terminal at KTM airport ensuring we got on a flight and during trek making sure that we got the best possible experience out of the trek. Friendly and knowledgable I cant recommend Kishor highly enough. Nothing was too much trouble for him. All in all this was the trip of a lifetime, with breathtaking scenery, expect some long tough days of trekking staying in typical basic lodges. This is the only way in my opinion to experience Nepal and the Khumbu region at its very best. If you are looking to trek to Everest Base Camp look no further than Evertrek! Book now and experience the EBC dream and create some forever memories!

Thanks guys for the experience of a lifetime. What can I say about Evertrek! Simply brilliant. From the moment we spoke with Andy and signed up it was all taken care of. The guides were truly amazing, professional and were always on-hand to look after us. Listen, this is a tough challenge but it's well within the reach of most of you out there considering the possibility. I've kept myself pretty fit all my life (63 years young) but trying to keep up with my sons was, at times, pushing my limits. The scenery is so beautiful it becomes an emotional challenge at times. We did Kilimanjaro a few years ago - Base Camp blows that away completely. However, you need to be in the best hands and we were. Our guides, Rahul and Krishna were meticulous in making sure we were looked after every step of the way and needless to say we have become friends for life. I cannot recommend EverTrex highly enough. Don't think about this for too long - just do it. They'll get there and you'll never forget the experience. So,as soon as I have some pics ready I'll upload and share but please do not hesitate to contact me while I'm still flying through thin air!!! Thanks again Andy and EverTrex

Loved every minute of the Everest Base Camp trek! The guys were all very accommodating and helpful in the build up to and on the trek. Everything about the package ensured my time was comfortable, fun and without any worries. Our guide Rawal was informative, friendly and a great laugh when he got his drums out on the last night! A big thank you to Evertrek for making this happen and I look forward to booking with you guys again!

Hey guys!Just wanted to say a huge thanks to all at Bucket List, both here and in Nepal, for making my trip to EBC, Cho La and Gokyo so enjoyable and memorable. Himal, my guide, was a star and I enjoyed his company throughout the two plus weeks we were together; he looked after me really well and I have no doubt that his local knowledge helped to smooth the way on a few occasions when accommodation was tight! If my wife can be persuaded to let me go again, you will be my first port of call.Cheers!
