Even David Goggins couldn't be bothered

I was watching an interview with David Goggins recently. You may know who he is but if you don't, he's an ex-Navy Seal, has done all sorts of super crazy things and he's HUGE on mindset.

He's the sort of guy that trains for hours and hours every single day.

He's got the world record for the most pull-ups in 24 hours.

He's completed the BUDS training which is the notoriously awful training for Navy Seals and he completed this with two broken feet.

He's also completed ultra-marathons completely unsupported.

So I think we can agree that he's a very interesting character, to say the least.

In the interview, he said that there are times when he really cannot be bothered going running or exercising. Sometimes he will stand and look at his shoes for 30 minutes because he really doesn't want to go.

However, without fail, every day, he'll put on his shoes and go for a run.

Without fail!

Now I thought this was very interesting and also quite insightful as this was from someone that you could probably call one of the most disciplined and motivated people around in the world...

Yet he still struggled to get out and run sometimes.

I know from experience that my motivation can waiver from time to time.

I'm sure you may have even had these types of things where you think, f#&k it I'm not doing it.

But it's humbling to know it's not just us. Even the best have problems with motivation sometimes.

There's a lot of lessons we can take from this but the number one that I can pull from this is that sometimes you have got to accept that there will be days you're not quite on your A-game.

You've got to accept there will be dips in your motivation.

However, if you keep that goal in your mind and remember why you chose to go for that goal it can really pull you out of the depths and into motivation-station.

Over the years, there's definitely been a correlation between motivation and success in the mountains. The people who get to the summit of Kilimanjaro or reach Everest Base Camp are usually the ones who battle on and are super motivated.

They may not be the fittest out of the group, but they are the types of people who battle on when most would sit down.

That doesn't mean fitness isn't important, the time spent in the gym or in the mountains are the ones that really give the biggest benefits and your trip will be so much more enjoyable the fitter you are!

Just this week on the Mountain Mindset - The Power of Positivity workshop in the Summit Zone, we discussed this very thing. Motivation or Fire as we called it. Finding that fire inside of you to get out of bed, get up and get moving.

It can be difficult sometimes to find that fire but the more times you succeed, the more it becomes a habit, the more habits like this that you cultivate, the more of a learned behaviour it becomes and that can only be a super positive thing in my mind.

So as you head off into this month, remember your motivation(or fire) and if you hit a stumbling block, you could even use the power of looking at your shoes and then go and do it anyway just like Mr Goggins.

I hope you enjoy and have an awesome month of adventures.

Keep EverTrekking

PS:
This isn't the interview I mentioned but this one is awesome about finding your new 100%
